We interviewed patients with retinitis pigmentosa at home to test the acceptance of a new sight-aid device. The visits provided additional insight into how participants cope day to day, both at home and in the street.
Research method
Observing participants in their natural environments provides direct insight into how they interact with products, services and other people. It connects what participants say with what they actually do in real-life situations.
We joined participants on a night-time bar crawl to observe consumption and attitudes towards a newly introduced alcoholic drink. Peripheral participation helped us learn directly from real-life situations.
We spent a day with a patient with multiple sclerosis while they received IV treatment in hospital. This provided first-hand insight into the facilities, infusion experience, patient emotions, HCP involvement and support received.
Research method
Video diaries provide access to participants’ natural routines, lifestyle behaviours and cultural nuances without requiring a researcher to be present. They capture experiences as they happen and in the participant’s own words.
Patients periodically recorded videos showing their medicine intake, the devices they use to adapt to their condition, and the changes made at home to support daily life with the disease.
